Redhook concept (3)

my idea is designing a 3D urban fabric for city’s expansion over water front to create extra space for mainly public housing program. In my design I emphasized on urban design principals such as access hierarchy and public spaces. One of my other concerns was energy efficiency and using renewable energy sources mainly wind. High density has been the other issue; As new urban design studies indicate high density increase people’s social and cultural integration. The design was also aiming on increase importance of public space and relation between public and private

I studied mega structures as the start point for designing the infrastructure hovering above existing water fronts and shores.

Here I list some of main characteristics of mega structures in 20th century:

-High density

-Horizontal and vertical circulation

-They happen at City scale

-Promotion of new urban life style

-Concept of city within a building

-Issue of mobility in different scales

-Space frames and 3D grids

-Multi-functionality and elevated programs

Mega-structures are criticized for:

-Neglecting urban design principals such as access hierarchy

-In human scale – monotone view – lack of legibility

-Costly and non energy efficient - was not the an issue in 60th

-Considering A little value for existing cityscape

-Very utopian
